What does the current shift towards promoting so-called 'creative industries' imply for the role of artists and designers? How do ideas of cultural and artistic development relate to the 'creative production', as seen within the current focus on creative industries?. The market view on creative industries often treats artist and creative workers as merely suppliers in a chain of creative production - be it to design a product, develop a game, produce a film or create a media experience. But those working in the arts and other cultural sectors have an intrinsic motivation to innovate, not as suppliers, but as creators. They create added value through uniqueness and diversity. How can artists and other creative workers play a role in the context of the creative economy, without conforming to the homogenising demands of the emerging creative industries? What does this imply for artistic practice and policies for artists and designer in the new creative economy?
